A New Day with Janie T. (#04)
From
Heaven or Earth?
Was
He from Heaven or Earth? I don’t know. This one thing I know, I will never
be the same after our meeting.
It
was a very chilly, frosty morning, when I was out cleaning off the heavy frost
from my pickup windows before leaving Calgary, AB for a fifteen-hour drive
back home. The stars were shining brightly over the city.
Shortly after 4:00 AM, I had reached the outskirts of Calgary where a
dense fog had rolled in. Thank God I could see the taillights of a big tanker
to help me navigate through the fog for the next two hours.
It
was such a relief to drive out to clear weather again. Getting through the
border was speedy, (not much traffic on the roads) this time of the year. I
stopped at a small town to fuel up and have an omelette to carry me the rest
of the way home. My better senses were saying, “Eat now or you will drive
the rest of the way, stopping only for fuel stops and rest areas only.”
As
I was finishing fueling, washing windshield and windows, I noticed that the
construction project that had been started eleven days earlier was now
finished in front of the building where I had to go in to pay for the fuel. I
am quite an observant person. That comes with traveling alone. I noticed that
they did a good job of putting the oiled surface up to the sidewalk and curbs.
I
went in to pay for the fuel and came out, still noticing the newly constructed
project, never seeing a person sitting on the sidewalk with his back up to the
building and his knees tucked tightly in front of him. Getting into the
pickup, fastening my seatbelt, I reached to turn on the ignition. Next, I
stepped on the brake to turn the key when I looked out the window and saw this
person sitting over there. I looked closer and he was almost hidden by a
hooded sweatshirt type jacket. He had on another coat over that. In his hands
was a little sign that had; “Hungry” sprawled on it.
For
a moment I sat there and thought, “How could I drive off with a full stomach
and provisions to take me all the way home and leave that young man begging
for something to eat.” I looked at the sack of homemade chocolate chip
cookies that a beautiful little thirteen-year-old girl, (an angel herself) had
made for me just the night before. She said that she wanted me to have
something to snack on as I drove home the next day.
I
picked up the sack of cookies and some money and walked over to give it to
him. By this time he was on his feet. I pulled back the hood of his jacket to
get a better look at his face. He had the most beautiful bluest of blue eyes I
have ever seen. Eyelashes that were long and beautiful. He wasn’t handsome
- he was beautiful; his long wavy brown hair framed his shoulders. He
reminded me of my two sons who are so handsome and have such beautiful eyes
and long eyelashes.
Handing
him the cookies, I asked him if he knew Jesus. He said, “Yes.” I asked him
if he had asked Jesus into his heart. He said, “Yes.” I told him that I
couldn’t leave him until I knew that he knew the way to heaven. He said,
“I know the way.” Then a little “Mom” just had to come out. I put my
hand on his chest and told him that he had better not go and get a cheap
thrill with that money. He said, “I won’t, I promise you, I won’t.”
I
got in my pickup and drove away. As I was heading down the interstate highway,
I couldn’t help but weep. Thoughts came flooding into my mind. “I wonder
if he took a quarter of the money and called his family. Does he even have a
family? Does his family even care where he is? Did anyone care that he spent
the night out under the stars and that his coat was covered with frost? Is his
mom praying her heart out for a son that she doesn’t have a clue of where he
is? What must it feel like to be so cold and damp from the night’s dipping
temperature? How must he feel to be out there somewhere not knowing if anyone
cares?
Then
I thought, “Lord, did I entertain an “angel unaware as your Word speaks
of? Could this young man have been an angel from Heaven sent from God to test
my hearing, “Spiritual hearing?” Jesus if you sent him just for me, I
passed the test. I fed the hungry; I told him about you and blessed him. And
if he is from Earth, (some mom’s son) I gave him some of what you have given
me. I passed the test.
Since
being home, and in my own bed at night, I have not missed a day or night
sending up prayers for him and his family. If he were from Heaven, then thank
you Jesus for such an awesome experience. If he is a resident of this earth,
then thank you Jesus for that precious moment with one of your little lambs
and some mom’s son.
Rolling
on down the highway, looking at the freshly painted landscape, only God could
paint a picture like this. The trees were now turned to gold and reds, the
mountains were capped in purest white snow, and the trees were adorned with a
dusting of fresh snow.
My
mind trailed back over the years to a time when my sons walked out the door
and I never knew what time they would be home nor where they were. I just
prayed, “Lord rock my babies tonight__they are out there some where___I just
don’t know where. Later these words became a song, "Rock My Baby" on a
CD entitled “From
A Mom’s Heart__I Love You.
This
was just one of the indescribable events that happened in eleven days while
driving to Canada, the time spent in Calgary, and on the drive home. The Lord
made himself so real to me in another dimension that I’ve not known before.
In the past it was only a heartfelt desire, a prayer that had not been brought
into fruition.
Don’t
give up on your long time prayers. Change is coming. Watch and see. Taste and
see that the Lord is good. The days ahead will require an intimate
relationship with Jesus. His word is spirit and truth. His promises are
forevermore established. Dwell in the secret place of the most high God, stay
fixed on His Word, the Bible. The Word is your refuge, a place to hide. In His
presence there is fullness of joy.
He
will make a way where there seems to be no way. Jesus is the way, the truth
and life. There is no other way.
